Record only those features that:

1. can be described with decent accuracy by typographic cues, so as to minimize the need for interpretation on the part of keyers;

2. will degrade gracefully to acceptable output even when the instructions fail to anticipate some circumstances (as they will, repeatedly and unexpectedly); and are either

3. essential to presenting an intelligible display (not necessarily one that mimics the appearance of the original in any way); or

4. productive of useful results when searches are restricted to them.
